I began this piece by sketching several small thumbnails of the lock and key in different compositions. I decided on locking the key inside the lock in order to provoke thought among the viewers.
I then sketched a large version of my lock and key on larger paper. My personal philosophy behind the composition symbolizes being locked within yourself, not being able to freely express ones own feelings but the viewer may interpret the piece however they want.
I began adding values to the composition and started taking the eraser to it. I realized most of the paper was empty so I decided to add the plate in which the lock was placed on in the drawing.
When I finished adding the plate in the drawing, I had to take the eraser to it again. When I erased i made sure I did uniformed streaks in only one direction to make sure the piece did not look sloppy.
I made the sides darker as well as the shadows. After I was done I had to at to add highlights from the cellophane.
Once I finished the cellophane I went back and cleaned some areas up which was the last step before completion.
