To start this project I took a ball of clay and flattened it into a slab. I then took the slab and laid it on balled up news paper and plastic bags in order to let to clay curve in the way a mask typically does.
For the mask, I wanted it to look like Hawaiian so I based it off the tiki's. I made a Hibiscus flower to put on top of the mask.
I then carved outlines for the eyes to get a general location of where I wanted to put them. I then made lips, a nose, and attached the flower by scoring the clay and using slip to make sure it stays.
I then added teeth and carved out the inside of the eyes to add an extra level of depth. Also I carved lines into the sides to add extra detail.
Once dried, I selectively glazed my tiki. I decided to only glaze the flower and place the mask in the pit fire.
I feel that selectively glazing it was a good decision to finalize the project.
